Community rules

The identifier and the finds feed are where foragers help each other work out what they’ve found. To keep it useful and safe, please follow a few simple rules.

Updated 14 October 2026

1. Safety comes first

  • A photo is no reason to eat a mushroom. Neither the site nor other foragers can confirm edibility from a picture. When in doubt, leave it.
  • Don’t write “safe to eat”, “definitely edible” or “I ate it and was fine”. Help identify the species; let the species page speak about edibility.
  • If you see someone being told to taste a doubtful or poisonous mushroom, report it as “Dangerous advice”. We review these reports first.
  • A community verdict (“Confirmed”) only means most foragers agreed on the species. It is not an expert opinion or a guarantee.

2. Respect for others

  • Be kind, even when you disagree. Getting a species wrong is normal — that’s exactly why people ask here.
  • No insults, threats, humiliation, politics or off-topic arguments.
  • No advertising, spam, or links to sell mushrooms or promote other services.
  • Don’t post other people’s personal data: phone numbers, addresses, exact locations of someone else’s spots.

3. Your own photos only

  • Post only photos you took yourself. No pictures taken from the internet or social media.
  • By sending a photo you confirm you are its author and allow MycoNote to use it on the site and social media free of charge and without time limit. We credit it with the name from your profile.
  • We remove the shooting location (GPS) and phone model from photos before saving them — nobody on the site will see them.
  • Don’t photograph people without their consent, and nothing obscene.

4. How identification works

  • Once you post, the site suggests similar species based on the features in your form. A poisonous species that fits always comes first.
  • Registered foragers vote “Agree” for a species or suggest their own. One person, one vote per post.
  • When a species has 5 or more votes and two thirds of all votes, the post is marked “Confirmed”.
  • The more features you fill in (especially the underside of the cap, the ring and the sac at the base), the better the suggestions and the easier it is for others to help.

5. Reports and moderation

  • You can report a post, a comment or a user via the “⋯” menu or the “Report” button. Only moderators see who sent a report.
  • A comment with three reports is hidden automatically until it’s reviewed.
  • Moderators can hide or delete a post or comment and block an account for serious or repeated violations.
  • If you think your post was hidden by mistake, write to us and we’ll look into it.

6. Your account and your posts

  • You can hide or delete your posts in your account. Your “Found / Looking for” collection can be hidden from others in profile settings.
  • You can delete your account from your account page. Your posts and comments stay, but without a name, signed “Deleted forager”. If you want them removed too, write to us.
  • How we store and protect data is described in the privacy policy.
