🔬 Morphology

Cap

Upright coral

A bushy fruiting body with no cap. Size 5-10 cm tall, 3-7 cm across. Branches thin, straight, parallel, rising vertically, like a little brush or broom. Color ochre-yellow, becoming brownish-yellow to brown with age. The branch tips are thin, pointed, the same color, often darker at the base.

Ramaria aurea

A bushy fruiting body with no distinct cap or stem. Overall size: 8-15 cm tall, 10-20 cm across. It consists of a slender lower trunk and numerous parallel, straight "fingers" pointing upward. Color: rich yellow-gold, bright lemon when young, turning ochre with age. The branch tips are blunt, the same color as the branches themselves (unlike R. botrytis).

Hymenophore

Upright coral

The spore-bearing layer covers the surface of the branches. Spore print ochre.

Ramaria aurea

The spore-bearing layer covers the surface of the branches. Spore print ochre-yellow.

Stem

Upright coral

Shared base short, thin, 1-3 cm tall, 0.5-1 cm across, ochre-white with fine felty threads at the bottom (where it attaches to the substrate).

Ramaria aurea

The shared base is short, 2-4 cm tall, 1-2 cm thick, whitish-yellow, and divides into numerous branches. Surface smooth, white-yellow.

Flesh

Upright coral

Flesh thin, limp, yellowish. Quickly turns brown when pressed or cut — a characteristic reaction and an important diagnostic. Taste distinctly bitter, astringent.

Ramaria aurea

Flesh firm, white or pale yellow, toughening with age. It may turn slightly brown when pressed — a weak reaction. Taste mild at first, then slightly bitter, especially in older fruiting bodies.

Smell

Upright coral

Faintly mushroomy with a hint of anise or fresh conifer cones.

Ramaria aurea

Faintly mushroomy, nothing distinctive. None of the fruity notes typical of R. botrytis.
