In Ukraine the mushroom season doesn't switch off in a single day like a light. It fades gradually: first the warmth-loving summer mushrooms disappear, then the autumn ones fade out, and by the time the frosts arrive only a few hardy species remain in the forest. Let's look at when exactly the season ends, which mushrooms you find last, and whether there's anything to forage in winter.
When the main season ends
The mushroom season peaks in September–October. In October there's still a generous flush of honey fungus, bay boletes, late brittlegills and Tricholoma (knights). But once steady night frosts set in, usually in late October — November, the main season winds down.
The exact date varies from year to year and depends on the weather: a warm, damp autumn stretches the season out, while early frosts cut it short. We wrote about how cold affects mushrooms in our article how temperature affects the mushroom season.
How late in the year porcini grow
Porcini love warmth, so they're among the first to disappear. The last porcini usually turn up until mid-October, and in a warm autumn a little longer. After the first serious frosts there's no point looking for them.
Which mushrooms are picked last
The hardiest species fruit when everything else is already gone:
- bay bolete — hangs on until November and doesn't mind light frosts;
- late honey fungus — keeps coming right up to the steady cold;
- Tricholoma (knights) (including the field blewit) — love the chill of late autumn.
We covered these cold-hardy mushrooms in our article mushrooms of the cool season and first frosts.
Are there mushrooms in winter
Yes — even in winter the forest isn't completely empty. During thaws, two hardy species appear on trees and stumps:
- velvet shank (winter mushroom, Flammulina), which fruits even in freezing weather under the snow;
- oyster mushroom, which you pick from the trunks of broadleaf trees.
So strictly speaking, the mushroom season in Ukraine never fully ends — it just shrinks to a handful of winter-hardy species. And we've gathered the general logic of mushroom growth in our piece how fast a mushroom grows and how long it lives.

Frequently asked questions
When does the mushroom season end in Ukraine?
The main season winds down once steady night frosts arrive — usually in late October or November. The exact date varies each year: a warm autumn extends the season, early frosts cut it short.
How late in the year do porcini grow?
Porcini love warmth and are among the first to disappear — the last ones usually turn up until mid-October, and a little longer in a warm autumn. After the first frosts they're gone.
Which mushrooms are picked last before winter?
The hardiest ones: bay bolete (until November), late honey fungus and Tricholoma (knights), including the field blewit. They love the cool and don't mind light frosts.
Are there mushrooms in winter?
Yes. During thaws, velvet shank (Flammulina) and oyster mushroom appear on trees and stumps. They withstand frost, so the mushroom season never really stops at all.
Why do mushrooms disappear in autumn?
Because of the cold. Low night temperatures and frosts slow the growth of fruiting bodies, and warmth-loving summer species die off. Only winter-hardy mushrooms remain.
Can you extend the mushroom season?
Extending it isn't in your power — the weather decides everything. A warm, damp autumn without early frosts gives you mushrooms right into November, while a dry or cold one ends the season sooner.
When does the new mushroom season start in spring?
The first spring mushrooms — morels and false morels — appear as early as April, as soon as the soil warms up. So the gap between the end of the winter mushrooms and the start of the spring ones is very short.
