🔬 Morphology

Cap

Ivory woodwax

Cap 4-8 cm (young ones 4-5 cm), hemispherical at first, then convex-flattened with a small umbo. White or creamy white, with a faint yellowish tint, especially at the center. The surface is moist AND slimy in wet weather — a thick layer of clear slime. In dry weather it dries out and becomes smooth.

Gold flecked woodwax

Cap 2-8 cm, hemispherical at first, then convex-flattened with a broad umbo. White or creamy white, with a distinctly yellow margin — a characteristic feature. The surface is covered in fine whitish or yellowish down (hence «hairy»). Slightly slimy in wet weather.

Hymenophore

Ivory woodwax

Gilled hymenophore. The gills are widely spaced, thick, and decurrent (a typical feature of the genus). White at first, taking on a cream tint with age. Spore print white.

Gold flecked woodwax

Gilled hymenophore. The gills are widely spaced, thick, and decurrent (a typical feature of the genus). White at first, turning yellowish with age, especially the edges — golden yellow. Spore print white.

Stem

Ivory woodwax

Stem up to 10 cm tall, 0.5-1.5 cm thick, cylindrical or tapering toward the base. White; the surface is slimy in wet weather, with a white mealy coating at the top. Hollow inside. No ring.

Gold flecked woodwax

Stem 5-8 cm tall, 0.8-1.5 cm thick, cylindrical. White, with a characteristic band of yellow granular flecks at the top, as if dusted with semolina (this is what gave it the name «golden»). The surface is dry, without slime. No ring.

Flesh

Ivory woodwax

The flesh is white, firm in young mushrooms, becoming watery with age. Does not change color when cut. A faint, unremarkable mushroomy taste.

Gold flecked woodwax

The flesh is white, firm, with a distinctive aroma. Does not change color when cut. Springy texture — holds up well to frying and stewing.

Smell

Ivory woodwax

Faint mushroomy smell, mildly pleasant. Some sources describe a hint of almond or resin. Taste bland, mild.

Gold flecked woodwax

A distinct, pleasant mushroomy smell. Some sources describe a hint of resin or wood. Taste mild, pleasantly mushroomy.
